The Basics of Poker

In a typical game of Poker, a player must make bets based on their hand’s strengths and weaknesses. When there are no winning hands, players can fold or raise the betting pool. The game goes around the table clockwise, revealing players’ hands to see which player has the best hand. In professional games, the player who starts this process is determined by the rules of that particular variation. When the final betting phase begins, only players who have not folded or been eliminated have the chance to win the hand.

Players buy chips to participate in a Poker game. In games with seven or more players, poker chips should be provided to each player. The lowest-value chip is called a white chip. A red chip is worth five whites. A blue chip is worth two, four, or five reds. Players buy in by purchasing chips from the dealer, usually the same amount. If a game is played with fewer than seven players, it is not necessary to provide chips to all players.

The highest ranking hand in poker is called a royal flush. This hand consists of five cards of the same suit, and can be either straight or flush. Straight flushes are made up of 5 consecutive cards of the same suit. Pairs of twos or threes are used to break ties. If two hands are identical, they split their winnings. However, the highest unmatched cards, as well as the highest secondary pair, can break a tie.
