The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where the player who holds the best hand wins. It is played with cards, usually in a deck of 52, and is one of the most popular forms of gambling in the world.

The Rules of Poker

Players are dealt a hand of five cards, and they can bet or raise any of them. They can also bluff, which is when a player bets that they have a better hand than they actually do.

Ranks of Hands

Each hand has an assigned rank, based on its unique combination of cards. The highest-ranking hand is called a royal flush, which includes a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of the same suit. It can only be beaten by another straight, which is 5 consecutive cards of the same suit.

The rest of the hands are ranked by their high cards. A straight contains any five cards of the same suit, a full house is three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank, and a pair is two cards of one rank and two unmatched cards.

How to Play the Game

In Poker, players place bets or raises with poker chips. These are usually white or light-colored, with a value of the minimum ante or bet. The chips are held in a common pot with other players in the betting interval, which is when the cards are dealt and the action is open.
