Whether the game originated in Asia or Europe, it has a colorful history. Some say the game originated in France, and the English word is derived from that word. The game of poker is believed to have originated in the 17th century when card hustlers played it with a deck of twenty cards, shuffled face-up and cut. It was later translated to German as pochen and introduced to North America by French settlers.

Each round of the game has a dealer. This person is responsible for shuffling the deck and dealing the cards to the players. A non-player may be assigned to be the dealer throughout the game. Usually, players take turns being the dealer, and the dealer chip is passed on to a new player. Certain betting rules apply depending on the location of the dealer. If a player leaves the table before the end of the game, he does not get his share of the kitty.
