Writing About Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game that mixes skill, intuition, and luck.

The basic game involves players putting an ante into the pot before they are dealt cards, then betting according to the rank of their hands. After betting, players discard up to three cards and draw again from the deck, and then another round of betting is played.

Each player must reveal his or her hand, and the best hand wins the pot. There are many variations of this game, with some involving straights and others awarding the pot to the lowest hand as per the standard ranking of poker hands.

There are also games where the highest and lowest hands divide the pot. These games are called high low split games, and may be further complicated by whether or not hands such as flushes are considered in the hand rankings.
